G. K. Chesterton on Comparative Religion

James Ross Kelly's avatarSt. John One: One

G._K._Chesterton_at_work

Comparative religion is very comparative indeed. That is, it is so much a matter of degree and distance and difference that it is only comparatively successful when it tries to compare. When we come to look at it closely we find it comparing things that are really quite incomparable. We are accustomed to see a table or catalogue of the world’s great religions in parallel columns, until we fancy they are really parallel. We are accustomed to see the names of the great religious founders all in a row: Christ; Mahomet; Buddha; Confucius. But in truth this is only a trick, another of these optical illusions by which any objects may be put into a particular relation by shifting to a particular point of sight. Those religions and religious founders, or rather those whom we choose to lump together as religions and religious founders, do not really show any common…

2014 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2014 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 14,000 times in 2014. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 5 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.

QUOTE (Noel Paul Stookey) – Dec 30

JD Blom's avatarA DEVOTED LIFE

Moving (Peter, Paul and Mary album)

“The union of your spirits, here,
has caused Him to remain
For whenever two or more
of you are gathered in His name
There is love, there is love.”
~ Noel Paul Stookey, The Wedding Song (There is Love)

In honor of Noel Paul Stookey, American folk singer and member of the 1960s folk trio Peter, Paul & Mary, who was born on this day in 1937.  Shortly after he became a Christian, Stookey wrote the Wedding Song (There is Love) to bless the wedding of his fellow band member Peter Yarrow.

The fundamental conflict between Calvinism and Arminianism is not sovereignty but God’s character–Roger E. Olson

Roger E. Olson

Roger E. Olson

“Basic to Arminianism is God’s love. The fundamental conflict between Calvinism and Arminianism is not sovereignty but God’s character. If Calvinism is true, God is the author of sin, evil, innocent suffering and hell. That is to say, if Calvinism is true God is not all-loving and perfectly good. John 3:16 says “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life.” “God so loved the world.” Calvinists must explain this as meaning that God loves “all kinds of people,” not everyone. Or that “God loves all people in some ways but only some people [the elect] in all ways.” Arminians believe these interpretations distort the clear message of the Bible about God’s love. If Calvinism is true, John Wesley said, God’s love is “such a love as makes the blood run cold.” It is indistinguishable from hate—for a large portion of humanity created in his own likeness and image.”
